Distant: “Can I help you?”
I got off exactly one photograph of the mummified rat on the sidewalk today outside a Baltic Street auto body shop before a stocky man, glaring at me and with a small boy in tow, strode up and swept the whole scene away with his bare hand.
“I’m taking a picture of the rat, brother.”
“You gotta be nuts takin a picture of the rat.”
I stared back, snapping my lens cap on. So much for a rat mummy series.
“I thought you were one of the neighbors takin a picture of the place. You want the rat?”
He’d dropped it in the dumpster behind me.
“Nah, man, it’s just a rat.”
Mummy.

Installing the drill head for a Queens subway tunnel shaft. Slow, claustrophobic, exhausting work, the drill’s innards are a cramped hive of grease, hose, and steel. And it’s not a job for the impatient; once in place, the drills often chew earth only at a quarter inch per minute.
